Metals are extracted from the Earth’s crust by the process of mining. The process through which metals are extracted is highly complex. With the advent of new technology, new types of equipment are now used in the mining process. This process includes Surface mining and Sub-surface Mining.
Surface mining includes techniques such as open-pit mining and strip mining. In open-pit mining, minerals are extracted from an open pit, whereas in strip mining, minerals are extracted by removing the surface layers.
In Sub-surface Mining, minerals are extracted by digging tunnels and shafts.
